If you’d like a custom guitar or drum kit built, just send me an email. Every piece is quoted individually because most people want something unique—your shape, your timber, your story. Custom designs can be created from scratch as well. It’s all about giving the fans exactly what they want.

Hexed Drum Kit

Matte Black — The Hexed Drum Kit & RECH Cymbal Range

The Hexed Drum Kit is the largest, darkest, and most instinct‑driven creation in the Matte Black world — a full percussive monument carved from reclaimed Tasmanian Oak and assembled entirely from the vision in Matte’s mind. No schematics. No drawings. No measurements taped to the wall. Every bracket, lantern mount, drum cradle, and illuminated panel is built from memory, as if the entire structure already existed in his imagination long before the first piece of timber was cut.

Reclaimed Tasmanian Oak, Burnt to Reveal Its Soul

The frame and shell system are constructed from Tasmanian Oak salvaged from demolition sites, straightened and stabilised, then lightly burnt to pull the grain to the surface. The charred finish gives the kit a ritualistic presence — smoky, textured, and alive with the scars of its former life. Every surface feels like it has been summoned rather than assembled.

A Full Hexed Arsenal

The Hexed Kit surrounds the drummer like a wooden cathedral, built for scale, theatre, and sonic force. It includes:

  • 8", 10", 12", 14", 16", and 18" toms

  • Two 20" kick drums

  • A steel 14" snare chosen for its sharp, cracking attack

The layout is immersive and towering — a sculptural environment as much as a drum kit.

Illuminated Signs & Flickering Lanterns

To complete the haunted‑house atmosphere, the kit incorporates glowing signage, carved wooden symbols, and lanterns that flicker like candlelight. Shadows move across the burnt timber as the drummer plays, giving the entire structure a living, breathing presence on stage. The lighting is not decoration — it is part of the instrument’s identity.

Portraits of the Alters

Two small portraits of Matte’s alters sit in spiked wooden frames, mounted like relics or guardians. They add a psychological and personal layer to the build — a reminder that the Hexed Kit is not just an instrument, but a manifestation of the artist’s inner world.

The RECH Cymbal Range — The Metallic Voice of the Hexed Kit

The RECH cymbals complete the Hexed setup, forming a metallic halo around the burnt‑oak structure. Selected for their explosive character, dark wash, and cutting definition, the RECH range is built to match the scale and aggression of the Hexed Kit.

A Complete Cymbal Armoury

The RECH range includes:

  • Hi‑hats with a tight, articulate “chick” and gritty open wash

  • Crashes that explode quickly and fade into a smoky shimmer

  • Rides with a defined bell and complex, dark body

  • Splashes and effects cymbals for sharp punctuation and eerie accents

  • China cymbals with a ripping, aggressive bite

Together, they form the final sonic layer — the shimmer, crash, and metallic snarl that completes the Hexed experience.

Designed to Match the Hexed Identity

The darker finishes, raw edges, and hammered surfaces of the RECH cymbals pair naturally with the burnt Tasmanian Oak, the illuminated signs, the flickering lanterns, and the spiked portrait frames. Under stage lighting, the cymbals glow and shadow in the same haunted‑workshop atmosphere that defines the entire build.

A Drum Kit Built From Vision, Fire, and Instinct

The Hexed Drum Kit and RECH cymbal range together form a complete percussive environment — reclaimed timber, steel, fire, and light working as one. It is not just a drum kit. It is a stage piece, a sculpture, a ritual object, and a fully realised sonic machine.

A creation built from instinct, imagination, and the kind of craftsmanship that can only come from seeing the entire structure in the mind’s eye before the first cut is made.

Knuckle Thumper Drum Kit

Matte Black — The Knuckle Thumper Drum Kit

The Knuckle Thumper Drum Kit is a vision‑built creation — a full percussive structure carved from reclaimed Western Red Cedar and assembled entirely from the blueprint that exists in Matte’s mind. No schematics. No drawings. No measurements taped to the wall. Matte sees the finished kit in his mind’s eye, then brings it into the real world piece by piece, shaping every curve and support by instinct.

Reclaimed Western Red Cedar With a Ceremonial Presence

The entire frame and shell system is constructed from Western Red Cedar salvaged from demolition sites. Once straightened and stabilised, the cedar reveals a warm, rich grain that gives the kit a regal, almost sacred presence. Instead of lanterns or illuminated signs, this build leans into refinement — the natural timber elevated with 24‑carat gold leaf lettering and symbolic motifs that glow softly against the cedar’s surface.

A Full Knuckle Thumper Arsenal

The Knuckle Thumper is built for scale, tone, and visual impact, featuring:

  • 8", 10", 12", 14", 16", and 18" toms

  • Two 20" kick drums

  • A steel 14" snare chosen for its sharp, cracking attack

The layout surrounds the drummer in a sweeping arc of cedar shells and gold‑leaf details — a structure that feels both ancient and modern, ceremonial yet aggressive.

Gold Leaf Lettering & Symbolism

Every symbol, nameplate, and motif is applied by hand using 24‑carat gold leaf.

  • Gold‑leaf lettering across the cedar panels

  • Symbolic markings integrated into the frame

  • Subtle gilded accents that catch stage light

The gold transforms the kit into something that feels handcrafted and ceremonial — a percussive artefact built with reverence and intention.

The RECH Cymbal Range — The Metallic Voice of the Knuckle Thumper

The full suite of RECH cymbals completes the build, forming a metallic halo around the cedar structure. Selected for their explosive character, dark wash, and cutting definition, the RECH range includes:

  • articulate hi‑hats

  • fast‑crashing cymbals

  • dark, complex rides

  • splashes and effects cymbals

  • ripping china cymbals

Together, they add the shimmer, crash, and metallic snarl that completes the Knuckle Thumper’s sonic identity.

Built From Vision, Not Blueprints

Like all of Matte’s most complex builds, the Knuckle Thumper Drum Kit is constructed entirely from intuition. The proportions, spacing, and structural supports are shaped by feel, not formulas. The result is a drum kit that feels summoned rather than assembled — a cedar monument adorned with gold, built for players who want presence, power, and a touch of the ceremonial in every strike.

The Knuckle Thumper stands as a refined counterpart to the darker Hexed builds — warm cedar, gold leaf, steel, and sound working together as one.

Meat Axe Guitars

Matte Black Guitars — Hand‑Built From History

Matte Black Guitars are crafted from reclaimed Australian timber, salvaged from demolition sites where the wood has quietly seasoned for decades. Each piece of Jarrah and Oregon is straightened, stabilised, and selected for its grain, density, and tonal personality before becoming part of a new instrument.

The Meat Axe Hollowbody series showcases this philosophy at its most sculptural. Jarrah forms the structural edges and headstock, delivering deep, resonant low-end response, while Oregon insets reduce weight and add a lively midrange character. The result is a hollowbody that feels powerful, responsive, and unmistakably individual.

Every guitar is shaped, carved, and finished entirely by hand. Pickups are left to the player’s preference, allowing each instrument to be voiced to its owner’s style. Once complete, the guitar is signed, named, and numbered in 24‑carat gold leaf, then authenticated with the maker’s right thumbprint sealed beneath the clear coat.

No two Matte Black guitars are ever the same. Each one carries its own grain, its own sound, and its own story—reborn from reclaimed timber and transformed into a performance‑ready work of art.

Ash Cloud Guitars

Matte Black Guitars - Instruments Carved From Time

Matt Jonas Guitars are built from timber with a past. Every piece is reclaimed from demolition sites, churches, and century‑old structures where the wood has quietly seasoned in stable conditions for decades—sometimes more than a century. Straightened, stabilised, and selected for its grain and tonal character, this timber becomes the foundation for guitars that feel alive, resonant, and unmistakably individual.

Ash Cloud Hollowbody Series

The Ash Cloud Hollowbody models are built from Western Red Cedar and Queensland Red Cedar reclaimed from a historic church—timber originally cut in the 1880s. This rare combination produces a tone that sits between a cigar‑box growl and a semi‑acoustic shimmer when unplugged. Exceptionally lightweight yet well balanced, the Ash Cloud series embodies the warmth, resonance, and character only century‑old cedar can offer.

Craftsmanship & Authenticity

Every guitar is individually voiced with the player’s choice of pickups, then signed, named, and numbered in 24‑carat gold leaf. A right‑thumb imprint sealed beneath the clear coat completes the authentication process, ensuring each instrument is documented as a one‑of‑a‑kind creation.

Matt Jonas guitars have been built for, played by, or signed by artists across the heavy, alternative, and rock worlds—including members of Slipknot, System of a Down, Kyuss, Mastodon, Muse, Kasabian, Wolfmother, Powderfinger, and many more.

Each guitar is a piece of history, rebuilt for the stage.

Grace tone Guitars

Matte Black Guitars — Reclaimed Timber, Reborn as Sound

Matte Black Guitars are crafted from timber with a past. Every piece is reclaimed from demolition sites, historic homes, and century‑old buildings where the wood has quietly seasoned for decades. Straightened, stabilised, and selected for its grain, density, and tonal character, this timber becomes the foundation for instruments that feel alive, resonant, and unmistakably individual.

Grace Tone Hollowbody Series

Grace Tone guitars blend Western Red Cedar with a Tasmanian Oak neck and fretboard, creating a smooth, articulate acoustic‑leaning voice. The 50mm body, scalloped face, rounded edges, and tremolo‑ready back end give this model its signature feel. Finished in candy‑apple red with black edges that highlight the timber’s natural nail holes and stress lines, the Grace Tone is both rustic and refined — a favourite for players who want tone, texture, and stage presence in equal measure.

Craftsmanship & Authenticity

Every Matte Black guitar is shaped, carved, and finished entirely by hand. Any pickups can be fitted, allowing each instrument to be voiced to the player’s style. Once complete, each guitar is signed, named, and numbered in 24‑carat gold leaf, then authenticated with a right‑thumb imprint sealed beneath the clear coat — a unique maker’s mark documented and photographed for provenance.

Matte Black guitars have been built for, played by, or signed by artists across the heavy, alternative, and rock worlds, including members of Slipknot, System of a Down, Kyuss, Mastodon, Muse, Kasabian, Wolfmother, Powderfinger, and many more.

Each guitar is a piece of history — reclaimed, reimagined, and rebuilt for the stage.

Hexed  Guitars

7 string guitar and 5 string bass

Matte Black Guitars — The Hexed Series

The Hexed Series extends the Matte Black philosophy into heavier territory, pairing extended‑range instruments with timber that carries real history. Each piece of Tasmanian Oak is reclaimed from demolition sites, straightened, stabilised, and then lightly burnt to draw the grain to the surface. The result is a raw, charred aesthetic that reveals every ripple and contour of the wood’s past life — a finish that looks forged rather than manufactured.

Hexed 7‑String Guitar

The Hexed 7‑string is built for players who want range, weight, and authority without sacrificing the organic character of reclaimed timber. The Tasmanian Oak body and neck respond with tight lows and a focused midrange, while the burnt‑grain finish gives the guitar a dark, elemental presence. Sculpted contours and extended‑range ergonomics make it comfortable for modern playing styles, and the pickup choice is left open so each guitarist can voice the instrument to their own tuning and tone.

Hexed 5‑String Bass

The Hexed 5‑string bass carries the same charred Tasmanian Oak construction, delivering a punchy, articulate low‑end with a natural growl that suits both clean and distorted tones. The reclaimed timber’s density gives the instrument a solid, resonant foundation, while the burnt finish highlights the grain like smoke rising through the wood. Balanced, responsive, and unmistakably Matte Black, it’s built for players who want presence both visually and sonically.

Craftsmanship & Identity

Every Hexed Series instrument is shaped, carved, and finished entirely by hand. The burnt‑grain process is done slowly and deliberately, ensuring the timber’s character is enhanced, not obscured. Each guitar and bass is then signed, named, and numbered in 24‑carat gold leaf, with a right‑thumb imprint sealed beneath the clear coat as a final mark of authenticity.

The Hexed Series stands as the darker sibling in the Matte Black family — reclaimed timber reborn with fire, grit, and a voice built for heavier music.

Devilock  Guitar

Matte Black Guitars — The Devilock One‑Off

The Devilock is a true one‑off creation — a custom commission that pushed Matte Black into new territory. Built from reclaimed Meranti and finished in a deep electric‑purple burst, this guitar was designed around a bold request: square, block‑style horns. At first glance the concept seemed too extreme, but once carved, shaped, and balanced, the design revealed itself as something striking, sculptural, and unexpectedly elegant.

A Shape That Shouldn’t Work — But Absolutely Does

The Devilock’s squared horns give the guitar a commanding silhouette, blending sharp geometry with the organic curves of the Meranti body. What began as a risky idea became a standout feature, proving that unconventional shapes can still feel cohesive, playable, and visually powerful when executed with precision.

Meranti Body, Electric‑Purple Finish

The reclaimed Meranti offers a balanced tonal foundation — warm mids, tight lows, and a clean attack — while the electric‑purple finish transforms the guitar into a stage‑ready statement piece. The colour shifts and catches light across the carved surfaces, emphasising the guitar’s aggressive lines and custom‑built identity.

Crafted as a One‑Off

Like all Matte Black instruments, the Devilock is shaped, carved, and finished entirely by hand. It carries the same hallmarks of authenticity: individually signed, named, and numbered in 24‑carat gold leaf, with the maker’s right‑thumb imprint sealed beneath the clear coat. But unlike the established series models, this guitar exists as a singular experiment — a custom idea brought to life with no intention of repetition.

The Devilock stands as proof that bold concepts, reclaimed timber, and fearless design can come together to create something truly unique — a guitar that shouldn’t have worked, yet turned out astonishing.

Cigar Box  Guitar

Matte Black Guitars — Groovin’ Cuban Cigar Box Series

The Groovin’ Cuban Series takes the spirit of reclaimed‑timber craftsmanship and channels it into two custom 3‑string cigar box guitars built from American Oak salvaged from an old cupboard. The timber carries decades of character, wear, and warmth — now reshaped into instruments that blend blues tradition with Matte Black’s signature handmade identity.

Reclaimed Oak With a Story

Each Groovin’ Cuban begins with American Oak that once formed the frame of a well‑worn cupboard. The timber is straightened, stabilised, and re‑cut into a neck that feels solid, resonant, and unmistakably vintage. The cigar‑box bodies retain their original charm, metal hardware, and printed artwork, giving each instrument a personality that can’t be replicated.

A Cigar Box That Actually Opens

Unlike most cigar box guitars, these bodies open like a miniature cupboard — a nod to the timber’s past life. Inside is a fitted compartment designed to hold the essentials:

  • a cigar

  • a cigar cutter

  • a hip flask

  • a lighter

  • your finger slide

It’s part instrument, part keepsake box, part travelling blues kit — functional, fun, and completely unique.

Crafted as Only Matte Black Can

Every Groovin’ Cuban is shaped, carved, wired, and finished by hand. Each one is signed, named, and numbered in 24‑carat gold leaf, then authenticated with the maker’s right‑thumb imprint sealed beneath the clear coat — the same process used across the entire Matte Black range.

The Groovin’ Cuban Series celebrates blues tradition, reclaimed materials, and the joy of building something that’s equal parts instrument and story.
